Lesser flamingos feed on Lake Natron with Shompole volcano (situated on the border of Kenya and Tanzania) in the distance at the northern end of the lake. Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias Minor) in Lake Natron - Tanzania. Lake Natron is the only regular breeding area in East Africa for the 2.5 million Lesser Flamingoes. Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, in the eastern branch of the East African Rift. Lake Natron in northern Tanzania is one of the most alkaline of the Rift system. As its waters evaporate in the intense heat, sodium sesquicarbonate, known as trona or natron, solidifies to resemble giant coral heads in brightly coloured water.

The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) comes to the area in great numbers to feed, nest and reproduce. The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is a large species of flamingo closely related to the greater flamingo and Chilean flamingo. It was formerly considered conspecific with the greater flamingo, but that treatment is now widely viewed (e.g. by the American and British Ornithologists' Unions) as incorrect due to a lack of evidence. Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. The reserve is located at the eastern end of the coastal strip of the Yucatán Peninsula, with the Gulf of Mexico at its northern limit. The area encompasses coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico and includes important wetlands designated under the Ramsar Wetlands Convention. The site presents a rich diversity of landscapes and ecosystems, such as mangroves, small estuaries, medium semi-evergreen forest, low deciduous forest, coastal dune vegetation, coastal lagoons, marshes (petenes) and savanna represented by tular vegetation, grasslands and reed beds that are the main nesting sites for marshland and sea birds.

"A close up of bladderwrack seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) shot on the shore of the isle of Harris. Also known by the common names black tang, rockweed, bladder Fucus, sea oak, black tany, cut weed and rock wrack. In the 1860s, it was claimed that bladder wrack, as a thyroid stimulant, could counter obesity by increasing the metabolic rate and, since then, it has been featured in numerous weight-loss remedies."

Wetland is an entirely different ecosystem. It is flooded with water, either permanently or seasonally. The primary factor that differentiates wetlands from terrestrial land forms or water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to the unique anoxic hydric soils. They are considered among the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as home to a wide range of plant and animal species.

Near Petten a 5.5 km coastal protection dike exists since 1880 (far right), the Hondsbossche dam; it has between 2013 and 2015 been reenforced with 20 million m3 of sand, creating two additional rows of dunes (left and centre) and an artificial brackish water lagoon (left). The new structure provides protection against the heaviest storms occuring once every 10.000 years and is expected to protect the lowlands for at least 50 years against the consequences of climate change and sealevel rise. A wooden cabin priovides a view on the lagoon where wetland vegetation and waterbirds are expected to colonise the area.
