Three mallard ducks are swimming lazily - slowly crossing the tranquil, early November morning Erie Canal waterway in Pittsford, NY just after dawn before the sun has fully risen. The background canal crossing truss bridge and colorful autumn trees lining the canal are reflected in the foggy, misty, rippling water. Strongest focus is on the ducks. The village of Pittsford is located in western New York State, just east of the city of Rochester, NY.

erie canal in Clay, New York
The 5-cent postage stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal was released in 1967.
Brilliant multi-colored bright and burnt orange, vibrant yellow, and scattered rusty red autumn leaves - an awesome, fiery, early morning, early November scenic display from the many varieties of deciduous trees lining the banks of the Erie Canal (New York State Canal System). All the sunlit trees, colors and canal structures are clearly and beautifully reflected in the smooth, slightly rippled water surface. This view from the Erie Canal Heritage Trail (formerly the north side canal towpath - now updated and modern) is looking west - past the North Main Street vehicle traffic bridge in the village of Pittsford, near the city of Rochester in Monroe County, New York, USA. The bridge is a low clearance bridge - it does not rise, or turn, or open in any way for boat traffic. In 1905, early immovable canal bridges like this gave a music composer named Thomas S. Allen the title and first chorus line for his legendary Erie Canal folk song: "Low Bridge, Everybody Down". Directly across the canal, on the opposite (south side) canal bank, is a public nature preservation park called Carpenter Park at the Port of Pittsford. The whole length of the Erie Canal is considered an official United States "national historic district" - it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
in the 1830s, keeping food, beverages cold in and around New York City depended on ice — and on harvesting it from the Hudson River. At its height in the 1880s, estimated 20,000 workers harvested blocks of ice between Poughkeepsie and Albany.

As the song says, the Erie Canal runs 363 miles (from Albany to Buffalo). making a navigable route by water from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, opening in 1825. This 19th century print is a steel engraving from HintonÆs (History of the United States) (1834). Text on this print: The Erie Canal And The Little Falls On The Mohawk River A clearing on the banks of the Mohawk Early settlers attacked by Indians J & F Tallis, London, Edinburgh & Dublin (publisher) Additional subjects around the circumference: Native American Indians; buffalo / American bison; early settlers being attacked by native American Indians.

The wooden bollard mooring post and docking cleats installed along the edge of the foreground concrete mooring dock enable holiday vacation leisure and recreational sailors and boaters to tie up temporarily for rest and relaxation; or for immediately accessible hiking and biking and local sight seeing. This mooring dock is actually a section of the towpath Heritage Trail - making it easy to begin exploring and discovering many scenic views and rural attractions east and west all along the waterway. Directly across on the opposite canal bank is a public nature preservation park called Carpenter Park at the Port of Pittsford. The whole Erie Canal is an official United States "national historic district" - listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
